Fascinated by body shapes? Like to capture form and feeling of people around you? Or perhaps you would like to develop your understanding of the clothed figure for visual storytelling - this 5 week course will take you from the foundations of proportions to handling materials, controlling mood and expressing character through colour and mark-making – the Gambrell way.

Session 1 – March 1 – Proportions, placement and angles
Materials – dry (pencils, pastels, charcoal, conte pencil etc. + paper A4 and A3)
Learning about scale and simple ways to measure and convey features in a way that captures the feel of a subject

Session 2 – March 8 - Form of body and fabric through tone and texture
Materials – dry (soft pastels and/or oil pastels + paper A4 and A3)
Using soft pastel and oil pastel, we’ll explore effective ways of creating volume using both light and dark and textural techniques.

Session 3 – March 15 – Colour focus
Materials – dry (soft pastels and/or oil pastels + paper A4 and A3)
Mood through control of colour – this session will build on the use of tone and explore approaches in colour giving you extra tools to control mood and atmosphere.

Session 4 – March 22 - Mark making and style
Acrylics will be used (Red, yellow, blue and white + a palette – at least a fine brush (4 or 6) and something broader (perhaps a 12) should be fine but a selection of different sizes would be great. Heavier weight paper – at least 200gsm.
For more expression in communicating the figure with feeling – I will take you through a range of different marks and surface interaction using my work as a basis.

Session 5 – March 29 – Composition control – making it all work
Wet or dry media can be used
I will help you to understand what is happening compositionally in your work and how take control of different elements to guide the viewer’s eye.

Materials – recommended to have some dry and some wet:
Soft pastels (set of at least 20 varying colours)
Acrylics (Primaries yellow, red, blue then also white - will be enough to mix)
Paper A4 and A3 size - mixed media paper for the acrylics – heavy weight 200gsm or more
Paper A4 and A3 size – for dry media 90gsm is fine – a sketchbook of about 30 pages is good.
Palette for paint, at least a fine brush (4 or 6) and something broader (perhaps a 12) should be fine but a selection of different sizes would be great.
Suggested: a selection of different general dry media such as pencil crayons or markers.
