This course covers the way I manage colour in my work and shares through clear teaching objectives how to understand, engage with and bring it into your own practice. Over 4 weeks, we cover the four pillars of colour use FORM, ATMOSPHERE, MAKING MARKS and COMPOSITION.
Class topics week by week:
Week 1 (November 8): Identifying
- FORM – using colour for its tonal value, we begin to describe volume and give presence to your subjects. We’ll introduce colour temperature which we’ll use throughout the course to emphasize form, organise and harmonise composition and provide visual interest.
Week 2 (November 15): Understanding
- ATMOSPHERE – using colour for hue – picking colour palettes to describe local colour, determine mood by understanding how colours relate to each other and use complementary pairings to setup tension and movement to captivate the viewer.
Week 3 (November 22): Taking control
- MAKING MARKS – we’ll use a number of my techniques like layering soft pastels and embracing the way I create colour texture with a mix of different mediums creating harmonies and allowing colours to mix in the viewer’s eye.
Week 4 (November 29):
- COMPOSITION – learn how crucial colour is as a way of managing the viewer’s interaction with your work – use the power of saturation to guide the eye and combine it with temperature to create depth.
Who is it for: Beginner to intermediate level
You must be over 18 years old
Materials: We'll be working with general art materials. - A4 and A3 paper and a good range of coloured pencils, pencils, markers, soft pastels etc.
Format: 4 x Zoom classes of 120 minutes with demos and Q&As and community forum on Discord
(all classes - Saturdays 1600-1800 GMT) - all classes recorded so you can catch up or watch again.
