A focus on sensitivity in portraiture. This 4 week course will distill the principles of four seminal pieces of my work allowing for distinct and overlapping exploration in SHAPE, COLOUR, APPLICATION, FORM and COMPOSITION.
Week 1 – Shape/Colour/Application - Simple but effective, we’ll break this piece down to understand the shapes, colour and soft pastel application in order to apply those techniques to create a new drawing from different reference.
Week 2 – Application/Colour/Composition – Summarising shape and tone, we decode the basic elements of colour application looking at tone and how to use expressive mark making using acrylic marker and soft pastel. Using what we’ve learned, we’ll produce our own drawings from different reference.
Week 3 – Form/Colour/Tone – Using this piece created on mid-tone paper, we’ll explore form using a range of carefully chosen colours for value and saturation. To consolidate the principles, we’ll make a drawing based on new reference.
Week 4 – Colour/Application/Composition – We’ll be focusing on composition, what drives the viewer’s eye in and around the drawing as we take apart this week’s drawing. Building on what we have understood, we’ll produce our own piece based on new reference.
Format: 4 x Zoom classes of 120 minutes with demos, Q&As and community forum on Discord

Who is it for: Participants need to have some basic experience of drawing faces and facial features and it will help to have some knowledge of ‘tone’ in drawing.
Participants must be 18 years of age or over

Soft pastels (set of at least 20 varying colours)
Acrylic markers – selection – but red for the class
Mid-tone paper
1 Sketchbook A4 size – cartridge paper 150gsm – smooth surface
