WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?:
…if you want to know how to draw faces with confidence so that you can move away from the reference and play.
…if combining different tools and mediums excites you.
…if you want the subject to lead the way.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
The aim of this course is to strengthen your portrait foundations. To then use the confidence from building shapes to be more playful in mark-making and colour/tone use to achieve results that step away from the reference but convey feeling.
To push your own freedom of play within portraiture by mixing the voices of different tools to harmonise a feeling.

WHAT WILL YOU DO IN EACH CLASS:
Each class will take 2 or 3 reference photos of a face with a focus on emotion and character. We’ll look at the reference through the following stages to give you confidence in each:
SHAPE + FORM – we simplify the shapes to give you more focus and control
MARK-MAKING – we loosen up and build texture through layering and play
COLOUR + TONE – we consider literal and more playful palettes to create atmosphere
FINISHING – pushing and pulling all of the above with a careful eye on composition to bring the whole pieces together

MATERIALS
(you should have the below mediums or similar – see last image):
Coloured stamps
Inks - brush
Markers – alcohol/ fibre-tip / paint
Collage
Acrylic + brush
Pencils – coloured / graphite / charcoal
Pastels – oil / soft
In addition to those specified in the session descriptions above, you should have a supply of fresh paper at size A4 and A3 or similar, along with a range of different mark making tools such as brushes for the inks or acrylics.
